Blog Post #4: Hyperreal and Imaginary

I've known about Disneyland for a long time but reading Baudrillard's idea of Disneyland being a simulated America makes me see it in a different perspective.

According to Baudrillard, disguising as an imaginary world, Disneyland concealed the fact that it is the real America, "just as prisons are there to conceal the fact that it is the social in its entirety" (p.25). It is presented as imaginary in order for us to believe that everything outside of it is real. It simulates the profile of America society and represents America's values and ideals. Baudrillard takes this idea even further by pointing out that out there, the real is not real. All is hyperreal.

Also, not very relevant but the reading makes me think about a very popular conspiracy theory online saying that the movie Frozen was made to conceal the fact that Walt Disney has himself cryopreserved, so that if you type 'Walt Disney frozen' on Google, the movie will appear instead.
The old man plays us even after he's dead lol!

  1. Yes, this whole thing about Walt Disney being frozen is really interesting in a conspiracy type of way. I really think that the context of the hyperreal is challenging to think about, but Disneyland is a perfect example for this. :)

  2. wow the ending part when you mention about the frozen it is wild. This fact is such a cool thing to think about. We keep bringing new things to make people stop thinking about the other old things.
